Technical Safety Studies
We help organisations in high-hazard industries identify major accident risks early, protect critical assets, and implement stronger technical safety controls.
What Is Technical Safety Studies?
Technical safety studies provide structured, systematic methods for identifying and assessing process hazards in high-hazard industries including oil and gas, energy, chemicals, manufacturing, and engineering.
Kevron Group supports organisations in scoping, facilitating and documenting technical safety studies including HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL assessment, QRA, Bowtie analysis, FMEA and fire and explosion risk studies. Our support is available at feasibility, design, construction and operational stages.
We work with engineering and HSE teams to define study scope, collect process data, facilitate structured examination sessions, and produce documented study reports with recommendations for hazard reduction, safeguard improvement and ALARP demonstration.

Who Needs Technical Safety Studies?
This service is designed for professionals and organisations who face these specific challenges.
Process Safety Engineers
Responsible for conducting or commissioning formal hazard studies at design or operational stages.
Project Engineers
Working on new facility design, modifications or brownfield upgrades that require formal safety reviews.
HSE Managers
Required to demonstrate ALARP compliance and maintain a formal process safety study programme.
Asset Owners
Responsible for maintaining the safety case and technical safety study register for operational facilities.
Regulatory Affairs Teams
Needing to demonstrate compliance with major hazard regulations through documented safety studies.
Engineering Contractors
Commissioned to complete technical safety deliverables as part of FEED, detailed design or operations support.
Problems We Solve
Undefined Process Hazards
Operations proceed without formal hazard identification, creating unquantified safety risks and regulatory exposure.
Fire and Explosion Risks Not Assessed
Facilities handling flammable or explosive materials need formal fire and explosion risk studies to demonstrate ALARP compliance.
No HAZOP or HAZID Documentation
Many organisations lack formal HAZOP or HAZID records required by regulators, insurers or project owners.
Safeguards Not Validated
Safety instrumented systems and safeguards may not be designed to the correct SIL or performance level without structured LOPA or SIL assessment.
Safety Case Gaps
Organisations subject to major hazard regulations need a structured safety case supported by quantitative risk assessment.
Lack of In-House Study Facilitators
Conducting a HAZOP or technical safety study requires trained, independent facilitators — not available in every organisation.

How the Process Works
Define Scope
We agree study objectives, boundaries, methodology and team composition with the client engineering and HSE team.
Collect Data
We gather process drawings (P&IDs), operating procedures, hazardous area classifications and relevant design data.
Facilitate Study Sessions
We facilitate structured examination sessions with the client team using approved methodology (HAZOP, HAZID, LOPA, etc.).
Analyse and Document Findings
We document hazard scenarios, causes, consequences, safeguards, risk ratings and recommendations.
Issue Draft Report for Review
We issue draft study reports for client review, comment and accuracy verification.
Finalise and Support Close-Out
We issue the final report and can support action close-out tracking and ALARP demonstration.

Frequently Asked Questions
Technical safety studies are structured, systematic methods for identifying, assessing and managing process hazards in high-hazard facilities. Common studies include HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, SIL assessment, QRA, Bowtie analysis and FMEA.
HAZOP (Hazard and Operability Study) is a structured technique for identifying potential hazards and operability problems in process systems. It uses a team of experts and guide words to examine deviations from intended design and operation.
LOPA (Layers of Protection Analysis) is a semi-quantitative risk assessment method used to evaluate whether existing or proposed safeguards are adequate to reduce risk to an acceptable level. It is commonly used to determine SIL requirements for safety instrumented systems.
Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment determines the required performance level of safety instrumented functions protecting against hazardous events. SIL is defined in IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 and applies to safety instrumented systems in process industries.
The information required depends on the study type. For a HAZOP, we typically need process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), operating procedures and material safety data sheets. We will provide a data request checklist at the start of each study.
Yes. We support technical safety studies at all lifecycle stages — new facility design, modification, revalidation and operational hazard review.
We support oil and gas, LPG, energy generation, chemicals, manufacturing and data centre sectors where process hazards exist and formal safety studies are required by regulation, client requirement or good practice.
Study duration depends on the complexity of the system being reviewed. A typical process unit HAZOP may take between 3 and 10 days of facilitated sessions. We will estimate study duration based on the scope and available P&IDs.
Study reports include the study scope, methodology, team composition, examination records (scenarios, causes, consequences, safeguards), recommendations with priority ratings, and an action register. Reports are issued in draft for client review before finalisation.
Yes. We can support tracking and close-out of study recommendations, including review of completed actions and documentation of ALARP demonstration.
